Tales by Dara I

Remember Dara my muse? Here she is getting set to owambe!

She had told me she would be wearing a pink outfit with a turquoise gele for the traditional wedding she was invited for so we started discussing looks. We agreed that most ladies would be sporting pink eyeshadow or turquoise eyeshadow as the high point of their makeup and as such we settled for something different - natural colors on the upper eyelid, a line of bright turquoise on the lower lid and a pale pink lippe. I leave you to judge if it turned out as expected.
I think it's clear her husband was happy with the results after waiting sooooo 'patiently'.

Benita...

Benita was referred to me by one of my clients, Isioma Coker. Let me seize this opportunity to thank Isioma immensely for her support and continued referrals. You Makeovers is indeed grateful.

Benita skin isn't one shade so we had to mix foundations to get her exact color, this we did with success. She was clear about how she wanted to look and told me what she didn't like and didn't want. That's a good trait to have as it shows a lady who knows exactly what she wants. It also guides the makeup artist to ensure that the client's expectations are met. When I finished, she was very happy with the results and said she was amazed she didn't have any complaints! *grinning widely*. In all things we thank God and give Him the glory for yet another successful makeover.

From Tomboy to Temptress!

Olamide has beautiful skin so she didn't need too much coverage. Just something to even out her skin tone and enhance her features. She confessed to me that she is just getting over her tomboy nature - I guess with marriage comes the need to be more womanly especially on the wedding days!

Here's to another You Makeovers Bride, wishing you immense marital bliss!

September Makeovers

September was an awesome month, my cousin got married and I was included in the team of makeup artists who helped to makeover the bridal party and more importantly because Olayinka David Elegbede and I got married!!!! *dancing with a wide grin on my face* I'm still basking in the euphoria of a new bride (talk about gifts in cash and kind pouring in at a rate I've never experienced - hand over face).

Ok, so back to reality, I've got lots of pics to share from my cousin Bisola's wedding so please, enjoy.

BUNMI, my elder sister was on the train. She's always been an avid supporter of You Makeovers, before, during and after the conception of the dream. This is her before I started...

 Yeah, talk about gorgeous eyes!

This is RAHILA, another beautiful young lady on the train. This is her just after I applied a mattifying primer...

And here she is after all was brushed and blended... :)

Next up is MARIAM

I agree, this picture does not do her justice, wait till you see her after the You Makeovers touch...

and finally...BIOYE

you all will have to pardon us, I can't remember why Bioye looked down in this picture

Bioye's gele was accidentally left behind in Surulere (we got them ready at the Federal Palace Hotel,Victoria Island) and as they were already hard pressed for time, she had to go to the engagement ceremony without the gele which was to meet her there.
All in all, it was a beautiful day, we def rocked it, had loads of food and drinks and a promise of a blissful marriage to Bisola and Sola Erogbogbo!

July Makeovers

DARALICIOUS

My friend Dara is a great gal (and intending muse - we are going to do great makeovers together *dancing etigi*). We met in 2007 while serving in Lagos NYSC camp (yes, beef us, we get correct connections) and for some seemingly divine reason, we've been very good friends ever since. Despite Dara leaving during NSCY (absconded corper!) and we both going abroad for our MSc degrees at different times, we have kept in touch. I guess it was the same divine reason that ensured that we both got married in the same year, two and half months apart and were on each other's bridal trains. I would like to use this opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to Dara and her amazing husband Abiodun for allowing You Makeovers to handle her makeup for both the traditional and white wedding. I must say it was fun and totally fulfilling.

June makeover

BINA
Hello everyone! it's been ages! Will do my bestest best to keep true to the vows I made when embarking on the You Makeovers commitment, lol. I've been up to different things, got a job, made up more ladies and got MARRIED! Will upload pics of me on my wedding days, you all are going to drool! Ok, so above is Bina who came over to my place to be made up for a wedding she and her husband were attending. She came over with her husband who watched us all the time and who also kept taking shots of the makeover as we progressed. Bina was lovely to work with, her husband was amazing and approved of my work. Bina and I will be getting together again soon for personal makeup classes. I'm so looking forward to it once we sort out all the logistics involved.

For the love of Falsies...

Hi my lovelies, yes...it has been a bit...loads of apologies necessary and loads given. Today I will be sharing one of my makeup disasters with you, maybe I should do a compilation of makeup disasters...just for the fun of it, let me think about it, don't know if I'm ready to handle the humiliation that will come with that.

Ok, so I love watching makeup tutorials on Youtube (did I mention that Youtube is an absolutely amazing phenomenon?), all sorts of makeup, all sorts of artists, even watched a guy do makeup on himself (not very enjoyable I must say) and then I come across tutorials on how to attach falsies. To those of us who aren't familiar with MUA jargon (MUA means MakeUp Artisit by the way), falsies are false eyelashes. Are you kidding me?, the tutorials look so freaking EASY! 'I can surely do this' I tell myself, all I need are the falsies, some glue and I'm an award winning falsie-fixer! Funny enough, I could never summon up the courage to buy any till I went into makeup full time. I attended the IMATS in London (International Makeup Artist Trade Show) and bought myself some nice human hair falsies (I didn't even know they made them in human hair!) and some glue of course with the strong intention of practising my tutorial - gained prowess sometime soon. I return to Nigeria and as I occasionally do, procrastinated.

I finally get the ample opportunity, Olayinka and I will be going out to see an evening movie and I want to look fab, it won't take me 5 minutes to fix them just like on Youtube....my darlings, I'm in the bathroom for a good 30 odd minutes struggling to glue strip lashes to my eyes, not to mention that there is no electricity so I'm also sweating heavily. I finally tell myself I have tried jare, at least they are on my eyes, it can't be too bad and I announce to Olayinka that I'm set. We get outside into natural light and Olayinka looks at me and says, where's the makeup you said you wanted to put on? (you see I had told him I was going to put on makeup, well...eyelashes are makeup too) I instantly cower and say sheepishly that I decided not to anymore since I had wasted so much time fixing falsies. I don't need to tell you that he had a good laugh and asked to inspect the lashes closely. In conclusion, I pulled off my lashes before getting to the cinema for fear of looking weird as I had not done a good job at all.

Lesson learned -  do not believe you can perform an activity 'perfectly' until you have tried. I came away telling myself that 'practice comes before perfect' and not the other way around.

Always,
Olusola :)

My first red lippie!

Yes, I am a makeup artist, Yes, I use makeup, Yes, I apply makeup for clients...I know...so it would come as a surprise to you that I have never worn red lipstick (at least until last Sunday). Told myself that this was it, I would use RED and not give a hoot, I had reached my final lipstick destination (for red lipstick that is). Maybe I was discouraged earlier on in the year, you see, I had walked into a MAC store in Brighton in the UK and was ready with full mental assurance that their Ruby Woo lipstick was a perfect match for my lips. I guess I do not have to tell you all that my hopes were terribly dashed and my confidence eroded (with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it was even the lighting in the store or some other force working against my red lipstick euphoria, lol).

Anyways, this fateful Sunday, I have this mental assurance (once again) that I would do fine using a red lipstick. I'm sure part of my confidence came from the fact that I wore a dress which had flecks of red in it. So...to cut my lovely story short, I prepare my face, flawless foundation and powder, soft natural eyes and yes, MaryKay Red Salsa lipstick. The result? The picture speaks for itself. And a very pleased me has decided that the red lipstick barrier has been broken. Praise God!
